Customer Visit: School of Chemical Engineering, Changchun University of Technology

Recently, VPI’s application engineering team visited the School of Chemical Engineering at Changchun University of Technology to conduct a routine follow-up and technical maintenance of the high-vacuum and low-vacuum coating systems currently in operation. This visit focused on evaluating equipment operating conditions, performing key component maintenance, and engaging in on-site technical discussions, with the aim of ensuring long-term system stability and providing sustained support for teaching and research activities.

As a university with a strong engineering background, Changchun University of Technology has long been committed to research and education in materials science and engineering. Thin-film preparation and characterization are essential tools in both experimental teaching and scientific research. VPI previously equipped the laboratory with an SD-650MHT series high-vacuum dual-target magnetron sputtering system, complemented by multiple low-vacuum coating systems. Together, these instruments cover a wide range of applications, from instructional demonstrations to advanced research sample preparation.

Inspection and Maintenance of the High-Vacuum System

During this visit, VPI engineers carried out a comprehensive inspection of the SD-650MHT high-vacuum magnetron sputtering system. The work included verification of vacuum system performance, inspection of pump units and pipeline connections, assessment of vacuum stability, and testing of magnetron sputtering discharge conditions. Through the viewing window, the plasma discharge was observed to be uniform and stable, and the system was able to reach the designated working vacuum range smoothly, indicating overall reliable operation.

In response to issues commonly encountered during long-term use, the engineers also provided hands-on guidance on daily maintenance practices. Topics included precautions for target replacement, recommended chamber cleaning intervals, and standardized operating procedures to help extend the service life of vacuum components. These face-to-face technical exchanges further strengthened the laboratory staff’s understanding of the system’s operating principles.

Routine Maintenance of Low-Vacuum Coating Equipment

In addition to the high-vacuum system, the engineering team performed routine maintenance and inspections on the laboratory’s low-vacuum coating instruments. As these systems are frequently used for teaching experiments and basic sample preparation, their stability is critical to experimental repeatability. Maintenance work focused on power supply checks, inspection of sealing components, and confirmation of standard operating procedures, ensuring reliable performance under high-frequency usage conditions.

Continuous Service and Long-Term Partnership

Based on on-site discussions, laboratory faculty and technical staff expressed positive feedback regarding the overall stability of VPI equipment and the responsiveness of the engineering support team. The systems not only meet current teaching and research needs in thin-film preparation but have also demonstrated consistent reliability during long-term operation.

At VPI, equipment delivery is viewed not as the end of service, but as the beginning of a long-term partnership. Through regular follow-up visits, on-site maintenance, and ongoing technical support, VPI aims to accompany users throughout the entire lifecycle of their equipment, allowing university laboratories to focus more fully on scientific research. Looking ahead, VPI will continue to build on its technical expertise and service commitment, working closely with universities and research institutions to advance the steady development of materials science and vacuum coating technologies.
